Introduction
My name is Setiva Gardner, and I am a mother of three and a full-time college student pursuing a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with minors in Psychology and Sociology/Anthropology. I grew up in a household shaped by my parents' struggles with addiction, and that experience has left a lasting impression on me. I witnessed the trauma and confusion that so many young people go through when the adults in their lives are not equipped to provide safety or stability. Because of this, I deeply understand why youth sometimes choose the wrong path. My passion is helping them find a better way, and just as importantly, I want to be the kind of parent who can guide my children with empathy, strength, and wisdom as they grow.
Where I am now reflects a journey of resilience, healing, and purpose. I never imagined I’d be building a restorative justice program for youth in my community, but every step I’ve taken has brought me here. Through my education and hands-on work, I believe real change happens when we see people as whole, not broken. I am particularly drawn to restorative justice because it allows people to be accountable, heal, and reconnect with their communities. My work today is rooted in the same values that helped me survive my childhood. I care deeply about using what I’ve learned to build programs that prevent harm and promote understanding, especially for those overlooked or written off.
I continue to grow as a leader in youth intervention and community-based justice. My long-term goal is to build a fully integrated restorative justice center in Douglas County where schools, families, and agencies can collaborate to support at-risk youth. I want to combine research, policy, and real-world experience to create sustainable change. Most of all, I want to be a force for good in young people’s lives, whether through my professional work or the example I set at home for my children.
This e-Portfolio reflects my journey, my goals, and the interdisciplinary lens that shapes how I approach education and life. It includes an overview of my academic work, professional experiences, and the values that guide me. As you explore each section, you’ll understand how I combine theory and practice to address complex social issues. I hope what you find here will explain who I am and invite you to imagine what is possible when we meet challenges with compassion, curiosity, and courage.
